our trap neuter return course is designed to teach you all the basics of TNR in 2.5 hours. These steps are essential for anyone interested in improving the lives of community cats where they live or work.

Toronto’s Trap Neuter Return program allows Ontarians to access world-class vet care of unowned cats who may otherwise be fending for themselves. All you need to do is attend and pass our Trap Neuter Return: How to Manage a Feral Cat Colony course, which is available On-Demand to work with your schedule. Present your certificate as proof of your successful completion of the course and you can begin your TNR project.

During the course, we will teach you how to humanely care for the unowned, outdoor cats in your neighbourhood. All steps in setting up a sterilized, vaccinated, healthy, and well-managed colony will be covered, including:

  • Trapping

  • Feeding best practices

  • Winter and extreme weather sheltering

  • Getting the cats fixed and clinic options

  • Working with neighbours and stakeholders

  • Borrowing traps, receiving food donations, and more

Digital resource guides will be provided and trapping techniques demonstrated. Toronto caretakers who complete the course will be eligible for access to the Toronto Animal Services, Toronto Humane Society, and Toronto Street Cats spay-neuter clinics for ferals, equipment loans, expert advice, and more! Those living in the GTA will be able to access OSCPA Stouffville, OSPCA Barrie, and Lincoln County Humane Society (St. Catharines).

If you live outside of Toronto and are willing to make the trip, services at Toronto Street Cats Spay Neuter Clinic and Toronto Humane Society’s TNR clinic is also available to the certificate-holders free of charge.

Please note, the free spay-neuter services are not for rescue purposes.

Why does TNR make a difference? TNR reduces the number of kittens born on the street into short lives. It improves the lives of adult feral cats through vaccination, regular feeding, and reduced fighting. Managed colony cats have been known to live 15+ years and move indoors to retire in their golden years with their caretakers. A caretaker can be anyone who has the time and heart to help these domestic animals that others have abandoned.
